Lot Details & Additional Photographs
Late 1850s, approximately .577 caliber, 32 in. round barrel with elevated rear sight; walnut stock with two bands, the butt stamped with an anchor device; brass trigger guard and butt plate; casehardened lock stamped with a second anchor device; shoulder with applied brass American eagle and shield; includes a companion Solingen sword bayonet with 23-3/4 in. blade that fits the rifle's lug.

Private North Carolina Collection

Originally manufactured in Belgium for Brazil's navy, these weapons entered the global arms market as the American Civil War was ramping up. It has been suggested that the eagle device placed on the stock indicates that this weapon was purchased for the state of Ohio, yet whether during or after the Civil War is not known. An unusual import.

The barrel retains most of its original brown finish; the casehardening on the lock is partial, but present; expected dings to the stock; good condition.
