Oil on board, 1964, signed and dated at lower right, retaining a typed label on the verso reading "Norman Sultan," presented in a period frame.

Born and raised in Asheville, North Carolina, Donald Sultan was encouraged to pursue his artistic interests from an early age. This painting, a portrait of his art art teacher at summer camp, was completed when Sultan was only thirteen years old.

Sultan went on to earn his BFA from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill in 1973 and an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1975. He moved to New York in 1975 and gained prominence as part of the "New Image" movement. Sultan has exhibited extensively, with solo exhibitions of his work shown at the Cameron Art Museum, Wilmington, North Carolina; North Carolina Museum of Art, Raleigh; Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.; Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; the Museum of Modern Art, New York; Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, California; Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington, D.C.; the British Museum, London; and many others.
