Sonia Delaunay was a Ukrainian born artist who was firmly settled and entrenched in the Parisian avant-garde by the age of twenty.

Sonia, née Sara Stern, married Robert Delaunay in 1910. Together, they developed what they called "simultanéisme" ("Simultanism"), which was a mode of abstract painting built on the theory of contrasting or complementary colors published by Michel Eugène Chevreul in 1839.

Sonia Delaunay applied her Simultanism to painting, textile, fashion and set design. She was the first living female artist to have a retrospective exhibition at the Louvre in 1964. Her work is found in the collections of the Tate Modern, London; the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Richmond; the Musée d'art Moderne de Paris; and more.

Jean-Louis Dalaunay and Richard Riss have confirmed the authenticity of this work.
