Private Collection, Charlotte, North Carolina

Chicago-born artist Mark Bettis attended the Ringling School of Art and Design in Sarasota, Florida, and went on to work as a designer in the advertising industry. He later relocated to Asheville, North Carolina, where today the Mark Bettis Studio and Gallery features not only his work, but the creations of other artists as well.

Bettis begins with oils and cold wax medium and builds up thick layers on wood creating fields of texture, often enhancing the work with sand and marble dust. Then, he works back the layers of pigment to reveal color combinations below by scratching, cutting, or smoothing.

Galleries across the United States have shown the paintings of Mark Bettis, and themed exhibitions of his work are ongoing at his own gallery.

Some lifting to linen at upper edge; abrasion at corners and edges.
