Alex Powers was born in Coeburn, Virginia. After teaching math and art in Virginia, North Carolina, and Florida, he was hired by NASA as a computer scientist. While working for NASA in Cape Canaveral he befriended a group of artists and decided to ditch the keyboard for a paintbrush.

In 1970 Powers moved to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina and supported himself by doing caricatures of tourists at the beach. With time and study, he gained a following for his work and taught classes in his apartment studio and in workshops throughout the country. He was awarded the American Watercolor Society Gold Medal in 1997. His book, "Painting People in Watercolor: A Design Approach," was in publication for 17 years.

A prolific and talented artist from Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, Powers has won numerous best-in-show awards throughout his career, including a gold medal from the American Watercolor Society in 1997. The Myrtle Beach Art Museum honored him with a solo show in 2010 titled alex powers: inquiries.
