Hughes Claude Pissarro is the grandson of the French Impressionist painter Camille Pissarro and son of Paul-Emile Pissarro. He spent his childhood frequently attending painting excursions with his father, accompanied by his numerous artist friends, which were formative from an early age.
Hughes first exhibited his work at the age of fourteen and subsequently studied art in Paris at the Ecole du Musée du Louvre and the Ecole Normale Supérieur. He later became a professor of art, and by 1965 had accepted an official invitation to teach art in Monaco. Throughout his teaching career, he exhibited on several occasions in Paris and London and was commissioned by the White House to paint a portrait of President Eisenhower in 1959.

From engraver, lithographer, publisher, and landscape painter to portraitist, his work conveys a broad range of techniques and styles. However, he is best known for his Impressionist-style works, known collectively as "Petit Claude", which have been exhibited throughout the world since 1985.
