The Civil War Through the Camera was published by newspapers in (16) weekly parts for subscribers to the Civil War Semi-Centennial Society with an optional binder offered after the last part was published. Each part was illustrated with photographs by Mathew Brady and others that were "Just discovered though taken fifty years ago." Subscribers were told that "Never in the past have readers been offered such a treasure ..." and that for 80 cents they could "bind the parts into a beautiful book, that will open flat, a pleasure to use and handle, in a few minutes' time, in your own home." These parts served as "samples" of McKinlay, Stone, and MacKenzie's Photographic History of the Civil War. This subscriber's edition extremely rare in complete form and with original card wraps and binder.

The first, binder with small cloth losses on back, wear and small losses at spine with gilding lightly rubbed, loss to one corner, marks to cover, cracking at hinges; paperbacks with expected toning and edgewear, occasional offsetting, light creasing and small tears, Part One with small losses to wraps at two corners. Overall very good in good binder. The second, binder and ties worn, with small losses and tears, toning and offsetting, marks, title rubbed on spine; paperbacks toned, with edgewear, small tears, creases, and losses, one with small stain. Good to very good in fair binder.
