Oil on canvas, signed at lower right, presented in a period ornate gilt and gesso frame.

Stretcher size 14 x 23 in. Frame dimensions 26 x 35 in.

Born in Rotterdam, Netherlands, de Haas was commissioned as the official artist of the Dutch Royal Navy in 1857. Despite this high accolade, he immigrated to the United States in 1859 to pursue his artistic career. He was elected an associate of the National Academy in 1862 and an academician in 1867. Mauritz de Haas' marine paintings were included in every Academy annual exhibition from 1860 until his death in 1895.

Small hole at upper left edge, a loss to the right and left edges, 2" area of abrasion to center with associated losses; some minor scattered fleabites; frame with age cracking, scattered restoration, and some separation and repairs to corners.
