Born in the Philadelphia area in 1946, John Clayton Bright is the third of ten children. In 1964, he joined the Army and served in the paratroops with a tour in Vietnam as a member of a long range reconnaissance team. Following his discharge, he worked in Australia, and then hitchhiked through the Far East, Middle East, and Europe.

Upon his return to Philadelphia, he worked at the stock exchange. A chance encounter with a Jersey cow in 1977 made a strong impression, inspiring a career as a sculptor. A friend gave an afternoon’s instruction in the craft of sculpture and Clayton finished his first piece, "Neilson’s Cow," later that year. Bright would go on to take training at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. Today he continues this representational ouvre at his studio located in the countryside west of Philadelphia.

Working exclusively from life and memory, J. Clayton Bright's figural sculptures are included in several museums and numerous private and corporate collections in the United States, Europe, South America, and Japan. He has recently been an artist in residence at Ladew Topiary Gardens in 2021, where twenty of the artist's life-size sculptures were installed at a solo exhibition titled Moments Observed: The Sculptures of J. Clayton Bright.
