Yves began drawing and sketching horses as a child, guided by his father, Charles Benoist-Gironière, himself an equestrian artist of note.
Yves was also a French senior officer and rider. At the start of World War II, he was assigned to a reconnaissance group. Taken prisoner by the Germans, he spent three months in captivity. His military honors include the War Cross 1939-1945, and the National Order of the Legion of Honor.
