Born in Auburn, Maine, Scott Leighton began horse trading at the age of 14. He moved to Portland at a young age and received his early artistic training under Harrison Bird Brown. In 1880, Leighton moved to Boston, setting up a studio of his own.

The artist exhibited his work at the Boston Art Club, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and the National Academy of Design in 1883, 1886, and 1887.
