Dutch artist and draftsman Douwe de Hoop trained under local painter Joost Zeeman, who specialized in still lifes, and apprenticed under Cornelis Kruseman in Amsterdam. He studied at the Rijksakademie Van Beeldende Kunsten, where he won several awards. Douwe de Hoop’s body of work is relatively small, due to his untimely death at the age of thirty. Examples of his work can be seen at the Rijksmuseum.

This particular portrait is a recent rediscovery and is documented in the database of the RKD (Rijksbureau voor Kunsthistorische Documentatie) as "whereabouts unkown."

Painting has an old lining and a wax lining; scattered areas of restoration with associated retouching visible under UV light inspection, age cracking; frame with minor age cracking and wear.
