This painting is sold with correspondence between the consignor and Malcolm Rogers, Head of the Archive and Library at the National Portrait Gallery in London in 1982, and, with Carolyn J. Weekley, Director of The Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Center in 1984.

Family history identified this portrait to depict a member of the Lea family of Virginia. However, no definitive answer was ever concluded.

Some loss to edges of canvas; old varnish; faint crackle surface.
