Jesse Carl Hobby studied painting in his native Cooperstown, New York. He later moved to the midwest, touring theater companies and undertaking decorative painting projects in addition to theater work, including backdrops for displays at Chicago’s 1933 Century of Progress Exposition. He settled in Oak Park, Illinois, and began pursuing landscape painting, studying under Alfred Juergens.

He was a member of the United Scenic Artists Association and exhibited in the All-Illinois Society of the Fine Arts
