Mid 19th century, unsigned, retaining label of Worcester Art Museum, Massachusettes to verso of frame, retaining apocryphal label affixed to stretcher en verso, presented in a molded giltwood frame.

Stretcher size 30 1/4 x 25 in. Frame dimensions 36 1/4 x 31 in.

Sir William Chambers RA was a Swedish-born British architect. Among his best-known works are Somerset House in London, and the pagoda at Kew Gardens. Chambers was a founding member of the Royal Academy.

This is a copy of a portrait by Breda in the collections of The Royal Institute of British Architects.

Painting has been lined, age cracking, retouching to background and traction cracks visible under UV light inspection, frame with minor losses.
