20th century, hollow cast and painted bronze, the mermaid signed and dated "K Illava / 16," the Satyr signed and dated "Karl Illava / 16."

Collection of a Gentleman, Yadkinville, North Carolina

Based in Massachusetts and New York, sculptor Karl Pavany-Illava studied sculpture with Gutzom Borglum and painting with Robert Henri, and also attended Columbia University. He was a member of the National Sculpture Society and the Architectural League. He is known for his memorial sculptures, including a WWI memorial of the 107th Infantry, completed in 1927 and placed in Central Park along the Perimeter Wall at Fifth Avenue and 67th Street. Mythological subjects were also a theme in the artist's oeuvre. For example, the Metropolitan Museum has an earthenware piece by Illava titled Satyr and Mermaid, accession number 64.167.16.
