Oil on canvas, 1933, signed and dated at lower right, copyright label for the Curtis Publishing Company for The Saturday Evening Post, Philadelphia, affixed to stretcher en verso, presented in an ornate giltwood frame.

Anton Otto Fischer was born in Germany and immigrated to the United States in 1897. After a little over a decade on the sea and racing yachts, he ultimately decided to pursue a career as an artist. He studied with Arthur Burdett Frost and Howard Pyle, as well as studying for two years in Paris at the Académie Julian.

Fischer is best known for his maritime paintings and illustrations. His work was published frequently in Harper's Weekly and The Saturday Evening Post, including fifteen cover illustrations. He was a favorite illustrator of Jack London and Guy Gilpatric.

In 1942, Fischer was honored Artist Laureate of the United States Coast Guard. His paintings have been exhibited and are in the collections of numerous museums, including the Corcoran Gallery in Washington, D.C. and the Mystic Seaport Museum in Connecticut.

Several repaired tears with associated retouching that has toned, especially to the sky area, some minor flaking and losses overall grime.
