Collection of a Gentleman

The sitter, Dr. Warren Jacob Whitney (1811-1891), was a Boston-based physician born in Milton to parents Moses Whitney and Rebecca Dunbar, and is listed in the Harvard Catalog of Graduates as having completed his thesis in 1835. There is also a newspaper article record from the Boston Daily Evening Transcript in Nov. 1849, listing Dr. Whitney's name in association with the Boston Free-Soil Representative Ticket. The party was active between 1848-1854, and largely focused on the single issue of opposing the expansion of slavery into the western territories of the United States.

Overall good estate condition; later acid free backing; loss to far right edge of wafer.
