Joseph H. Hirshhorn (1899-1981) started working on Wall Street while he was still a teenager and amassed great wealth through his investments in oil and mining. His money allowed him to become one of the country's greatest art collectors. He was an important patron of modern and contemporary art and a friend to many of the artists whose work he collected, including Henry Moore. His collection inspired the foundation of the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, D.C.
