Vintage Ship's Wheel Coffee Table, S.S. Essex

Mid 20th century, mahogany wheel with brass mount, inset glass top, brass plaque reading "S.S. Essex, Founded 9-26-41, Block Island, R.I.", mounted to five turned wood legs.

20 x 60 in. diameter

Built in 1890 at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the S.S. Essex was a steam freighter carrying general cargo that ran aground on September 26th, 1941 at Block Island, Rhode Island. The consignor's family reportedly salvaged the wheel from the wreckage.

Later legs and glass; overall good usable condition; the wheel with appropriate scraping and wear.
