From the Collection of Professor Roberto Severino, Washington, D.C. Aulus Gellius (2nd century) is known primarily through
Noctes Atticae, or
Attic Nights, a compilation of essays he wrote in Attica, Greece on a variety of subjects such as history and literature. These essays include passages from many ancient works, including some that no longer survive in their entirely, and offer insights into many topics of interest to Gellius.
Parchment heavily darkened and discolored, especially at front and spine, with light staining on the front cover and heavier staining on the back, edgewear, and minor sticker residue on spine, lacking ties; significant separation from text block starting at head with first gathering loose; wormhole at front hinge, free endpapers lightly frayed and one with writing in ink and pencil, pages lightly toned with occasional foxing, light grime, marginalia, or small ink mark, one page with corner loss not impacting text; damp staining and small wormholes common throughout, mostly concentrated at lower corner.
