29 3/4 in.

From a Private Collection, Washington, D.C.

An anatomical maquette of Houdon's l'Écorche (Flayed Man), after the original completed in 1767 while Houdon was a student in Rome, and the basis for his sculpture of Saint John the Baptist now in the Galleria Borghese, Rome.

The Caproni cast was probably made between 1935 and the mid-1950s during one of the company's "Caproni Galleries" iterations. The company originated as P.P. Caproni and Brother in 1894 and it was also preceded by a company with a different name. We would like to thank the Caproni Collection for their helpful information regarding this Lot.

Surface stains and scuffs, some areas with later painted repairs; each base with small edge chips; Caproni piece with shallow abrasion across left foot, and a hairline across the left knee; unmarked piece with visible mold mark.
