Large and Important Staffordshire Figure of Shakespeare
Lot Details & Additional Photographs
England 1810-1825, attributed to Enoch Wood, lead glazed earthenware painted in overglaze enamels, modeled leaning against a marbled pedestal molded with the busts of former monarchs, with the left hand he points to a document signed "Shakespeare" at the lower edge.

17 1/2 in.

From a Private Collection, Washington, D.C.

Apparently modeled after the marble monument of Shakespeare erected in 1740 in Poet's Corner, Westminster Abbey. A similar figure is on display at the Victoria and Albert Museum.

Restoration to the triangular left of the document, pointing finger, left upper edge of the pedestal, and several spots on the cloak's edge; some paint flakes especially at the shoes; cloak and pedestal are likely repainted from the original.
