American Late Classical Carved Rosewood Tall Post Bed
Lot Details & Additional Photographs
Circa 1840, rosewood veneer, four tall posts consist of four conjoined columns on square bases with chamfered corners, arched and paneled headboard with central carved shell and rosettes over a recessed panel with ribbon molding, shaped footboard and side rails with central fan, on casters.

Headboard 104.5 x 72 in.; 14 in. to bottom of side rail

The piece is from a home in Fairfield County, South Carolina that was occupied by four generations of the Kincaid-Anderson family from 1769-1900. The home was occupied by Sherman's troops in February of 1865, almost immediately after the destruction of Columbia, South Carolina. Neighboring homes were all burned, but the Kincaid-Anderson house was left standing. This bed has been in the ownership of descendants of Elizabeth Kincaid and Edward Anderson and on to subsequent consignors.

Some minor wood block replacements, some veneer chips, buckling and losses; lacking tester; some headboard carvings reset and with later glue runs.
