Johann Christoph Frisch studied under his father, Ferdinand Helfreich Frisch, and Christian Bernhard Rode. He supplemented his training by copying pictures in the Royal Gallery at Sanssouci in Potsdam. From 1765, he traveled to Provence and Rome and returned to Berlin in 1768, where he executed wall and ceiling paintings in several Potsdam palaces. Frisch served as a teacher at the Berlin Akademie der Kunste, being appointed rector in 1786 and director in 1805.

Numerous paintings by Frisch can be found in the Schloss Charlottenburg, Berlin; the Markisches Museum, Berlin; and the Neues Palais, Potsdam. A collection of his drawings is housed in the Kupferstichkabinett, Berlin.
