Thornton Oakley was an American illustrator, painter, and muralist, known for his industrial style. He studied architecture at the University of Pennsylvania, before joining the Brandywine School, studying under Howard Pyle. He illustrated numerous books and magazines and was commissioned by the National Geographic Society to complete 48 paintings of war plants and related topics during the Second World War.

His work is found in the collections of institutions including the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, the Historical Society of Pennsylvania, the National Gallery of Art, the Library of Congress, the Boston Public Library, the New York Public Library, and the British Museum.

Some cracking to areas of heavy paint application, toning to paper, hinge tape and old glue residue at upper edge.
