Justine Van Rensselaer Barber Hooper (1891-1982) was born in Southampton, Suffolk County, New York. She was the daughter of General Thomas Henry Barber and his wife, Harriet Bayard (Townsend) Barber. She grew up at 'Claverack,' the grand estate built by her father circa 1892, designed by Robert Henderson Robertson and with extensive landscaping by the Olmsted Brothers.

In 1915, Justine married Roger F. Hooper of Boston. They had four children, of whom Roger Fellowes Hooper, Jr. was her oldest son. Born on August 18, 1917, Roger attended the Groton School and Harvard College. After training in architecture at the Harvard Graduate School of Design and service in the US Navy during WWII, he and his wife settled in California. He was an award-winning architect and very active in the Marin Conservation League and other community endeavors. Mr. Hooper passed away on September 12, 2010.
