From the Collection of Professor Roberto Severino, Washington, D.C. Ludwig Bemelmans (Austrian American, 1898-1962) was an artist and prolific writer best known for his
Madeline series. However, his career as a children's book writer and illustrator started in the mid-1930s, several years before the first book in the beloved series was published.
The Golden Basket was his second children's book, and
The Castle No. 9 was his fourth. Both books rare in unclipped jackets.
