Lot Details & Additional Photographs
Foot fired: a large charger salt glaze and alkaline, the center decorated with glaze and raised white slip stylized forms (16 1/2 in.) signature not found, a lidded jar, alkaline glazed, decorated in shite slip (6 1/4 in.) stamped "East Fork", and a bud vase (7 in.) impressed glyph to the underside.
Private Collection, Virginia Great-grandson of Henri Mattise, pottery artist Alex Maisse, is the co-founder of East Fork Pottery located in Madison County.
Alex apprenticed in the workshops of North Carolina potters Matt Jones and Mark Hewitt. In their workshops Alex gained an appreciation for the traditions of the Anglo-Oriental school of Leach, Hamada, and Cardew to the folk pottery of the south-eastern United States and many places between.
Alex describes his own work as “a fusion of pre-industrial country traditions in both process and material. It is fired in a large wood burning kiln and made of as many local materials as the chemistry will allow, while still affording me the physical attributes necessary for my aesthetic decisions.”
Good condition; the charger underside rim has been pierced for hanging.
