Philip Villamil of Jamaica (1814-1878), Portrait of a Man

Oil on canvas (lined), signed at lower left, circa 1841-1842, presented in an ornate period gilt composition frame.

Stretcher size 42 1/4 x 30 1/8 in.; Frame dimensions 52 1/2 x 41 1/2 in.

Philip Villamil was born in Jamaica, but raised in a very cosmopolitan environment. He spent time in London, Paris, New York, Seville, Florence, Grenada, and Gibraltar. He exhibited paintings at the National Academy of Design in New York and the Royal Academy in London.

This large scale portrait may be one of two Retratos of a gentleman exhibited in 1842 at the National Academy of Design.
