John Mix Stanley was an American painter and explorer best known for his vivid depictions of Native American life and the American frontier. Born in Canandaigua, New York, Stanley was largely self-taught and began his career as a portrait painter before embarking on several expeditions to the western United States. His travels took him across the Great Plains, the Rocky Mountains, and the Pacific Northwest, where he documented the lives of indigenous peoples and the rugged landscapes of the region.
Stanley's work is noted for its historical significance, capturing a rapidly changing world during a time of westward expansion. Unfortunately, much of his work was lost in the 1865 fire at the Smithsonian Institution, but his surviving paintings remain important records of 19th-century American history and culture.
Over-cleaned; minor scattered retouch visible under UV light; minor rubbing and aging to frame.
