Roy Elliott Bates was born in Waterford, Connecticut. He was a graduate of Acadia Seminary and completed post-graduate work at Harvard. From 1905 to 1908 he was a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford University.
Bates traveled throughout Europe, painting landscapes in Italy, Sicily and Tunis. He studied in Paris and exhibited in the Paris Salon. After returning to the United States, he settled in Mystic, Connecticut and found work as a writer and painter for magazines. He continued to travel, spending his summers in the Catskills or Berkshires, and his winters in the mountains of North Carolina or the Arizona desert.
