A hand-written note affixed to the verso erroneously identifies this painting to be a portrait by Jean-Honoré Fragonard, but does indicate it was purchased from the estate of Lt. Col. Alexander Fraser Campbell MacLachlan (1875-1918) of Newton Valance, Hampshire, England.
