A North Carolina native, Lawing earned his BA from UNC-Wilmington and an MFA from UNC-Greensboro. He was curator of collections at the Weatherspoon Art Museum from 1985 until 1990. He also taught at UNC-Wilmington for over two decades. Lawing's work has been featured in numerous exhibitions, including group and solo shows at the Weatherspoon, North Carolina Museum of Art, St. John's Museum of Art in Wilmington, and the Greenville Museum of Art, Greenville, NC.
This painting is from a series Lawing completed in Carolina Beach State Park. He was inspired by the “beautiful and wonderfully varied landscape” of marshes, pine savannah and live oak trees in the park and bordering the Cape Fear River. The sand used in these paintings is the very white sand found in many places in the park.
Good estate condition.
