Scarce and Finely Bound 19th-Century Swedish Costume Book

Rebound in half red leather over marbled cloth-covered boards, spine gilt-lettered with gilt compartments and raised bands, with marbled endpapers and red speckled edges. Folio; title, [1]-4pp., followed by (22) color lithograph plates by A. J. Salmson after drawings by Wallgren. Text in Swedish; each plate with caption in Swedish and French.

An extremely scarce title presenting costumes of Swedish peasants, with only one copy listed in a library outside of Sweden in WorldCat at time of evaluation. This title is not to be confused with the very similar, but later and seemingly more common Skånska Folgdrägter from 1872.

Boards with light wear, slight rubbing at joints; endpapers with typical binder's stains at corners, Swedish bookseller sticker on paste-downs; minor repair on front free endpaper verso, area of gutter cracking at rear first free endpaper; small separation at head and/or tail of title page and a few plates, title page mildly toned; typical wear from age and use throughout with rare grime and scattered light foxing (heaviest on title page), minor offsetting from plates on blank versos, occasional small stain, and some plates with scattered spotting; glue residue and occasional wear at gutters from being rebound. A strong and sturdy volume; very good.
