Attributed Baltimore, possibly Gerrard Hopkins shop, circa 1770, white pine secondary, the crest rail and stiles with distinctive relief carving of stylized acanthus leaf, back splat with upper quatrefoil, molded shoe, shaped arm and arm supports with distinctive rope and tassel relief carving, flush molded seat rail with through tenon rear joinery, slip seat, pierced knee return, molded straight leg with inside chamfer, stretcher base, down-swept rear legs.

Rear seat rail stamped VIIII. Retains an attractive dark patina.
The outermost scrolled motifs along the back splat have a similarity in design to those seen in examples attributed to Gerrard Hopkins shop in collection of The Diplomatic Reception Rooms, U.S. Department of State, Washington, D.C., accession number RR-1973.0002.1-.2.
Left arm with tight split at joint to stile; later corner brace blocks; later pierced knee returns with two broken older knee returns separate (in bags); wear at front legs; missing center cross stretcher.
