Lot Details & Additional Photographs
18th century, likely Northwest European, carved wood with gesso and polychrome, unsigned, figuring a nun standing upon an integral terrace, mounted upon a later faux marble plinth.
50 in. (height with stand); Nun 38 x 16 x 9 in.; 12 x 12 x 12 in. (stand)
Old traces of black paint can be found on the verso of the nuns veil indicating it may have once been painted black. This along with the black cappa, and white habit, may suggest a beatified nun from Dominican order.
Areas of loss to fingers; lacking nimbus mount; some scattered chipping and polychrome losses; old insect damage; some shrinkage cracks (appear stable) including one to the terrace.
