This scene is taken from a Mathew Brady photograph and is published in the Winter 1981 issue of Virginia Cavalcade magazine.

Born in New York, John Mooney traveled to Georgia to enlist in the Confederate Army at the outbreak of the Civil War. After the war, he remained in the South and began painting painting professionally. He is known to have painted scenes of Savannah, Key West, Washington, D.C. and Richmond. In 1918, Mooney died in poverty after contracting tuberculosis.
