Introduced during the American Civil War and became the most widely used infantry weapon of the conflict. Manufactured at the Springfield Armory and by various private contractors, it was a .58 caliber, muzzle-loading rifle-musket with a percussion lock system. Renowned for its improved accuracy and reliability compared to earlier smoothbore muskets, the Model 1861 played a pivotal role in shaping Civil War battle tactics.
Overall good estate condition, working action, ferrous metals have oxidation and finish wear, stock has major working repair at wrist, barrel bands are replacements.
