Charles Lancaster, originally a barrel maker for Joseph Manton, established his own business in Drury Lane in 1811, supplying barrels to prominent gunmakers like James Purdey. By 1826, he began producing complete guns under his name at New Bond Street. After his death in 1847, the business passed to his son, Charles William Lancaster, who became known for innovative designs like the 1850 patent for the "Oval Bore" rifling system. In 1855, Charles was joined by his brother Alfred, who left four years later to start his own successful gunmaking company near South Audley Street. Despite operating separately, the brothers collaborated on various patents, solidifying the Lancaster name as a hallmark of British gunmaking excellence.
