I. & E. Campbell, Edinburgh.

Balthasar Denner was a German painter renowned for his highly detailed portraiture, particularly of elderly subjects. Born in Hamburg, he trained as an artist in Amsterdam and gained recognition for his meticulously rendered faces, capturing every wrinkle and texture with astonishing precision. His work, influenced by Dutch and Flemish realism, was highly sought after by European nobility, including patrons from the courts of England, Denmark, and Prussia. While his portraits focused primarily on facial details, he often left the clothing and backgrounds to be completed by other artists.

The painting has been lined, with professional repair and light retouching visible under UV light inspection, areas of rubbing to varnish, some toning to the frame liner.
