Born in Glasgow, Scotland, Russell Smith immigrated to the United States as a child and settled in Pennsylvania. Initially trained as a theatrical scene painter, he later focused on landscape painting, capturing the rugged beauty of the Appalachian Mountains, the Pennsylvania countryside, and other scenic vistas. His work, influenced by the Hudson River School, emphasized careful attention to light, atmosphere, and natural detail. In addition to landscapes, Smith also painted scientific and botanical subjects, reflecting his keen interest in the natural world. His legacy continued through his son, Xanthus Russell Smith, who became a noted marine and landscape painter.
