Nevins calls this "A classic rationalization by one of the war's most controversial figures" (p. 124). Eicher notes that "the historical narrative retains great value for showing McClellan's amazing faults" (p. 188).

Sturdy boards with wear to extremities, corners, and original backstrip, and some restoration to leather; paste-downs with tape and tape residue, and one with a tear; cracking at hinges, and gutter cracking at xi with gathering of preliminaries loose; interior lightly toned with occasional pencil writing, rare light spotting, one leaf with 1-in. tear, and rear endpaper formerly attached to final index page with associated small loss.
