Robert Underwood Johnson and Clarence Clough Buel, eds. BATTLES AND LEADERS OF THE CIVIL WAR: BEING FOR THE MOST PART CONTRIBUTIONS BY UNION AND CONFEDERATE OFFICERS. (4) volumes (complete). New York: The Century Co., [1887-8]. Rebound in half leather over marbled paper-covered boards, with gilt-lettered spine with raised bands, gilt top edge, and fresh endpapers. 4to; 750; 760; 752; 829pp. with index. Based on "The Century War Series" in Century magazine, with some changes before it was published in book form. Well-illustrated and each volume with frontispiece. Eicher 743.

Each 11 3/8 x 8 1/2 in.

David Eicher notes that "Numerous accounts by general officers make this work a necessary, primary source for all Civil War libraries" (Eicher, p. 260).

Boards sturdy and attractive with occasional light scuffing, edge wear, and mostly subtle signs of damp staining; clean interiors with occasional foxing (mostly at edges) and handling wear such as small areas of grime and edge wear (mostly from opening the leaves), including small chips and tears with an occasional larger tear or loss at margin; several leaves in vol. IV still partially unopened; some volumes retain original endpaper(s). A very good plus set.
