Born in 1995 in Durham, North Carolina, Sam Bordley is a classically trained artist and art historian whose education spans both the U.S. and Europe. After graduating from Durham School of the Arts, he earned a magna cum laude degree in Art History from Virginia Commonwealth University, where he also studied fresco painting under Dr. Jeffery Mims at the Academy of Classical Design. Sam went on to complete a master’s in Art Historical Studies at John Cabot University in Rome, while training in painting with Professor Timothy J. Allen at Art Studio Rome. This foundation led to Florence, where he spent three years at Charles Cecil Studios, studying and teaching traditional techniques of design and portraiture.

Now based in the U.S., Sam returns annually to Europe for continued study, including upcoming apprenticeships with Paul Ingbretson of the Boston School and Norwegian painter Odd Nerdrum—making him the only student to train with Charles Cecil, Ingbretson, and Nerdrum. He currently teaches classical methods within his community, committed to preserving the oral and in-person transmission of the artistic tradition. Sam's lineage traces directly to Jacques-Louis David and includes family ties to portraitist John Beal Bordley and history painter Emanuel Leutze—a legacy he upholds with deep reverence.
