Lot Details & Additional Photographs
Early 1900s, sand cast in two parts with angled cleat to base, two mounting holes, marked 3 1/2 on the underside of cleat.
Length 14 in.
Established in the early 20th century in the remote False Cape area of Virginia Beach, Virginia. It served as a private hunting retreat for wealthy sportsmen, primarily from Norfolk and other nearby cities. The club operated until the mid-20th century, when growing conservation efforts led to the area's transformation into False Cape State Park, preserving its natural habitat and ending private hunting operations.
This 3½-inch brass cleat was commonly used on duck hunting skiffs, layout boats, and small marsh docks. Its corrosion-resistant construction made it ideal for use in coastal and brackish environments. Produced by regional foundries or sold through marine supply catalogs. The simple cast design reflects the functional nature of early 20th-century waterfowling equipment.
Original with areas of wear and oxidation from age.
