Leo Meissner was born in Detroit, Michigan, and studied at the Detroit Fine Art Academy. After serving in World War I, Meissner received a scholarship to the Art Students League in New York, where he studied painting with Robert Henri and George Luks. He worked in commercial art until 1950 before focusing on his own career in painting, drawing, and printmaking. Although the artist is primarily associated with Monhegan, Maine, he traveled to Western North Carolina, New York, and the Arizona desert throughout his career.
Meissner established the Leo J. Meissner prize in printmaking at the National Academy of Design. He was a member of the National Academy, and his works have been exhibited in museums nationwide.
