Three quarter morocco over marbled paper-covered boards, spine gilt-lettered and with color and gilt-tooled floral designs within compartments formed by raised bands, with gilt top edge, other edges untrimmed, and marbled endpapers. 8vo. With double-page color pictorial limitation in volume I, and each with color pictorial title page and illustrated with frontispiece and full-page plates "from original drawings by eminent French and American artists," some in color, and each with captioned tissue guard. With critical preface by Paul Bourget and introduction by Robert Arnot; last volume with index.

Boards with toning at spines and edges (last volume with additional toning to upper board), some light scuffing and rubbing to extremities, and occasional small stain, mark, or dent; interiors overall extremely clean with occasional grime, light mark, or small stain; expected mild offsetting and edge toning, and infrequent subtle spotting and light wear at gutters and edges; a few leaves extended; one volume with margin wear; vol. I is the only volume with a tissue guard to title page (present but detached); volume XI with damp staining evident in first few leaves and causing slight warping to boards, minor cracking at tail of front hinge, and tight rear hinge; volume XVI with a few leaves very slightly loose; all captioned tissue guards present and some leaves partially unopened. A scarce, sturdy, attractive set.
