First edition with "Published May, 1919" and date code "D-T" (April 1919) on copyright; first state with marginal decoration in correct position and endpapers printed in green. Black cloth-covered boards with color illustration surrounded by gilt border mounted on upper board, gilt-lettered spine, and pictorial endpapers. Small 4to; xiii, [3], [1]-32pp. With four tipped-in color plates by Pyle and decorations by Wilfred J. Jones. BAL 3683.

From A Private Chapel Hill Collector First published in the late 19th century, this 1919 edition was Twain's adaptation for children, with contributions from Pyle, the important American illustrator.
Light wear to boards; still extremely sturdy but with slight separation from text block; endpapers with toning, spotting, grime, and offsetting from bookplate; pages with light toning, expected offsetting, scattered spotting, and a couple of minor marks; lacking dust jacket.
