In 1900, Ashbrook relocated to Cincinnati, Ohio, where he continued his artistic development under the guidance of Frank Duveneck at the Cincinnati Art Academy. He served as the director of the design department at Henderson Litho Company from 1900 to 1918 and taught illustration at the Cincinnati Art Academy from 1914 to 1919.

From 1920 to 1929, Ashbrook worked for the Strobridge Lithograph Company, designing many of the Barnum & Bailey Circus posters. His artistic endeavors took him on extensive travels to Europe and Mexico. His works were featured in exhibitions such as the Society of American Etchers exhibition at the National Arts Club in 1933 and at the Philadelphia Art Alliance.
